No Sticky feet Peanut butter Sandwich Take a slice or 2 of whole wheat, 12 grain or other healthy bread, spread with organic PB. You can if you wish sprinkle with some favourite seeds or a touch of mashed fresh fruit. Put the two halfs together. For interest cut you could cut into a shape..With your thumb and 1st finger. Squeeze tight all around the edges making an envelope to hold the PB inside. There you go a sandwich and no sticky feet. (This idea was shared through one of the lists, I do not know who to give credit too. If you do please let me know. |
Poppycorn An absolute favourite of all birds. Of course we all make popcorn, plain no butter no salt please, but have you tried adding to their bowl of popcorn, fresh cranberries, apple bits, cut green beans, raisins, peanuts, cashews. Anything and everything you have on hand to make it a little more interesting/nutritious. |

Rice and Vegetable dinner - Karin and Tini - Alberta Canada 1 cup Long grain brown and wild rice (or just brown rice) 1/2 chopped finely onion 1 tsp chicken bouillon power 2 cups water 1 cup veggies. (I use whatever is in season or frozen veggies in the winter) Cook the first 4 ingredients in saucepan with lid. Medium high till it starts to boil. Turn heat down, simmer slowly for 15-20 minutes till rice is cooked and water is absorbed. In another pot steam or heat your veggies till they are just barely cooked. Mix together and enjoy with your birdies. For the fussy birdie add a little of his favorite seed on top and watch him, you and everybirdie chow down. This same idea could be used changing the rice for mashed potatoes. |

Cook sweet potatoes (don't over cook) and mash, put aside. 2. Cook brown rice and place in with sweet potatoes. 3. Cook noodles, barley and green pea lentils, do not over cook. Place in separate bowl. 4. Blend peeled orange, carrots and or zucchini and drain, don't discard the juice. 5. Chop nuts and mix with hot pepper seeds and or meal flour.
Prepare: 1. Mix sweet potatoes, brown rice, noodles, barley and green pea lentil. 2. Add pulp from orange, carrots or zucchini and a little juice to form you balls. 3. Using a spoon (size depends or which birds are having these, mine life tsp size), scoop out tsp size of the mixture and roll in your hands. 4. Place balls in the meal mixture in a deep dish and roll around until they are completely covered in the meal mixture. 5. These balls can be baked in the oven for 15 - 20 minutes if you desire.
Storage: These sweet balls can be wrapped in wax paper and frozen. Or enough made for the week and place in the fridge.
Note: There are so many food items that can be added. Spinach, fresh veg, as well as fruit and you can make them any size. My birds like to eat and play with them at the same time. If your birds prefer baked bread crumbs then use that instead of the meal coating.

Monika's Birdie Bread - Saskatchewan, Canada
NOTE: I use prepared mashes for this recipe because it is absolutely the easiest and fastest way to prepare birdie bread. The mashes contain SO many super healthy ingredients that I couldn't even begin to buy all at once and then chop and cook beforehand. BUT there is no need to go out and buy prepared veggie mashes. It's just my own preference. From what I understand, this is pretty much the same as feeding Pro-Grow Grease and flour one loaf pan Cook 1 cup of brown rice and let cool Cook 1 cup of prepared mashes and let cool (www.parrotnutz.com or www.beakappetit.com) OR Finely chop and cook 2 cups of veggies that your birds enjoy and that you have on hand
Basic Mix: 1 cup cornmeal ¾ cup whole wheat flour 1 Tbsp baking powder (regular is okay but sometimes I have aluminum free powder from a health food store handy) 1 2 eggs well beaten (how many depends on what I'm adding to act as binding agents) 1 cup orange juice The juice flavor is your choice (no artificial "juice" and no added sugar) Add the cooked rice and mash or veggies Sprinkle in poppy seeds
Bake at 375 for approx. 45 minutes Once cooled, either crumble the bread or cut into squares and divide it up into 3 or more freezer bags. This is my basic recipe. I use other juices, and add different things. Try your own medley of finely chopped fruits, veggies, nuts and seeds. Don't forget to try cooked beans :>))

Treat ideas - Lee - Alabama 1. The quakers like cooked whole wheat Penne pasta Its about inch and half long, they grab it and hold with foot and eat. I hand them a piece when they are sitting on door perch before bedtime. 2. For bedtime treat, Leah likes a soft mash made from baby food. I use the stage 2 baby foods, she loves the squash, carrots, mix veggies, fruits... She loves to eat this treat from a spoon. Crumble a little birdie bread, about tablespoon full, add teaspoon of almond or peanut butter, mash it together, then add a couple teaspoons of baby food or whatever consistency your birds like. You may add some crushed pellets for vitamins. For variation, add a teaspoon of fruit baby food and teaspoon plain yogurt. 3. For popcorn treat, I add some millet clumps, tiny peanut butter sandwiches made from peanut butter on whole wheat or 12 grain bread cut into half inch cubes. You could also add some finely chopped fruit, as apple or grapes. This makes good afternoon or party treat for quakers or other medium sized birds. |

LIST OF DRY FOOD
List of dry food: Bulgur wheat, Veggie mix (for soups, which are a mixture of lentils and barley), Brown Basmati Rice (long course rice), White rice (long) steel cut oats (this is normally in little bits), Chick peas, Raw Soya beans (raw compared to baked or preservatives added), Pearly Barley (this is a larger, full barley), Pkt of large white beans, Cracked wheat and Hulled millet. With this you can add dehydrated veggies, chilies, spices and herbs, but don't cook at the same time as they don't need long to cook. You can add other dry ingredients to the mix like, brown noodles, black rice, and regular rolled oats. You can cook this mixture in a pressure cooker, slow cooker, stand over night and then cook on high or slow cook in a large stainless steel pot! I prefer to cook using the stainless steel pot, reason for this is it cleans easier and I have one with a drainer inside the pot. Cooking time depends on how you and your birds like their beans cook. Mine like them a little crunchy, not soft and sloppy! Boil high till water is bubbling then turn down to medium then simmer. I watch for the butter beans shell to start to separate and add a large packet of mixed veggies to the mix, cook another 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse in cold water, this stops the cooking and brightens the veggie so they are a nice color. I rinse well to get rid of the starch that develops with cooking. Drain very well. Package in Ziploc and put in the freezer for the week or month depending on the number of birds you have. I take mine out to naturally defrost late the night before serving. This is their basic, then salad (whatever's in session), 1 serving spoon of my seed mixture which includes a hint of pellets, dehydrated fruit, coconut, pumpkin seeds (raw), cracked wheat, and steel cut oats (the crumbles), spices, chilies and very few nuts. Dried food is put out the night before so all that's added is the cooked food and salad. (Salad is mostly different greens, peppers, zucchini, apple, peaches and others that are in session. Birdie bread is given most days - it's a small wedge and filled with mixed veggies, fruit, butternut squash or sweet potato and seed mix. Once the food is ready to serve I sprinkle a pinch of Flax, Sesame seed and hulled millet. |
