Important  Note
Katie, Tux and Stanley are never ever outside without the protection of their carrires. Please do not believe a clipped bird cannot fly.
Look at the picture I am posting here. This is proof positive oh yes they can.
We were camping. I was trying to take a nice picture of Katie with the lake behind her. She was sitting happily on her Dad's arm. Suddenly
a rescue boat whistle went off. It startled her. The result is what you see.
Just for a second imagine had she not had her harness on.
The birds 911 list daily have many posts where people have lost their beloved friend because they just stepped outside for a minute not thinking/knowing something could happen.
Unfortunately many people are told if they have their birds wings clipped they cannot fly. This is not true.
If you would like to share our poster helping to get the word out please visit this page.
Our carriers are called Adventure packs - they come from Flying South.com . Mine is easy because I go in it all by myself. Just set it up according to the directions, except the perch that came in it is very thin so Mommy got me a rope perch which is much better for me.
"Katie's blog"
July 2007
Two very important things. After Mommy puts my carrier in the stroller she ties it in. She tied strings on the frame of my stroller and leaves them there. Once my carrier is in she puts one end of the string through the bars of my carrier and then back out to tie a double bow. If perchance for some reason my stroller got bumped and tipped my carrier would not fall out and even more important no one could sneak
up, grab my carrier and run away with me.
AND
one other thing. Daddy took heavy duty quick ties and put them through the base of my carrier and back through the bars and zipped them tight. Cut off the long ends. This way if my carrier should get bumped the top will not break away from the bottom.
Car Safety Shelf
I have had many posts asking how Daddy made the special safety shelf for us in the car so I thought I would upload these two pictures to show you. Mommy says she gets these great ideas and then Daddy has to figure out how to do it.
As seen from front
As seen through rear door.
Daddy's instructions for our Bird Safety Carrier Shelf
1.      Cut a piece of 10" (or 12") wide x 5/8" (or ¾") thick shelf board, to slightly less than (possibly 1" to 2") shorter than the interior          width of  the back doors of your car (at the top of seat/window height).
2.      Drill ¼" holes approx. 1.1/2" in, from each side of the rear side/corners to accept support.
3.      Insert threaded shank ¼" eye hooks from the top of each hole, with nut and washer on top and washer with locking nut on             the bottom. Tighten locking nuts.
      See photos 1 & 2
4.      Measure space dimension of outer arms of adjustable headrest support posts and add 1/4" to ½" to this dimension.
5.      Screw-in heavy duty 'cup' hooks into the edge of the board (using total dimension obtained in 4 above). Temporary leave               hooks standing vertical. (Refer to photo #3).
6.      Take board to car. :-)
7.      Raise headrests and measure approx chain length required to fit from eyehook in board to coat hook in car.  Cut chain one           or two links longer (temporarily). Two lengths required, one for each side.
8.      Split end of chain link and make attachment to eyehook, (closing link after insertion). (To both eye hook ends)
9.      Hold board adjacent to head rest arms, push up against arms so that each cup hook is outside of arm, and then rotate cup              hook ¼  turn to secure to headrest. (See photo #2).
10.    Attach top end of each chain to each of the car coat hooks using quick 'snap type' safety hooks.  Be sure to adjust chain                  length to suit.         (See photo #4)
11.    Finished attachment should be similar to that of photo #5 & 6.
Note. It may be necessary to make adjustment to the way the shelf is attached to the seat headrest, depending upon the type           of  head rest adjustment bracket.

Last please look back at the first two pictures on top of page. You will see a strap going around there cages. This is stick to itself velcro and is put around the cage and board as tight as I can pull it.

Carriers
Tux and Stanley's Duplex
Mommy and Daddy are two people and we have three birdies. they decided to solve
that problem they would make the one carrier into a duplex. Of course this will only
work if you have a medium size parrot and a small parrot.
Cut a board to fit inside the carrier as snug as you can. Make it to fit tight against  the cage bars.
Decide at what height you want it..
Drill small holes in each corner of the board to hang it from. Be sure to drill holes far enough in from the edge to permit the locking perch to fit through the loop in the chain.
We used the little chain made of silver balls that you see on key chains. You can get it in stainless steel in the hardware stores. You will also have to buy a package of the special fasteners for this type of chain.
Put the chain through the holes and then around one of the cross bars..You will adjust the length of the chain according to where you want the new floor hung.
We had to put ours more to the top as Tux is much taller than Stanley. He is on the bottom being the largest.
Keep in mind when you are deciding placement that you have to be able to get each bird in and out easily. The door does not open fully top to bottom.
Cut three more chains to the exact same length as the first one and attach each as you did the first one.
It is fiddly to do this and have them tight but once done you need never remove them.
I took the two white perches that came in the cage, removed the end cap,cut them to a size of slightly longer than the width of the carrier. LAY them flat
along the board tight against the side bars so you are sure no little beaks can get to each other and it helps to stop the new floor from being able to vibrate while you are driving. The caps are on the outside of the carrier.
For Tux on the bottom I use the two yellow cups that came with the pack. For Stanley on the top I could not use these as there is not enough room heightwise because of where we placed our floor so I got him two small cups that would fit.
Each of them has a rope perch and a solid plastic perch. This rope perch is placed so the knobs are tight on top of the plastic perches you put right along the sides which holds them very firmly in place.
A toy is tied in one corner top and bottom so each has one hanging toy.. Be sure to tie the toy from the top and also secure to the side bars so it does not swing when you are moving. They are seldom played with when we are moving as they are far to busy taking in their world but times they are sunning on the verandah they do like their toy. Each also has a couple of foot toys..(small & light)
I cover the floor and the bottom tray with plain white paper towel as it is easy to change each time they come out leaving it all ready for the next adventure.
Hope this helps all of those that would also like a duplex for their birds..
Looking down on the new top floor
and here we are.

Their Stroller
The first picture shows you my stroller with me in my adventure pack.   My Stroller came from Petsmart.
The second picture shows you the screening Mommy made for me so those skeeters, buzzy bees and other flying creatures cannot bite me.
The third shows you the clear plastic cover Mommy made me for times when it might be a bit chilly, breezy or if a sudden downpour came.
We hope this page will help anyone who is wondering how to get started..If you have other thoughts to share on going out and about please email them to me to be added to this page. Thank you
